Acting out the story of Jack and the Flum Flum Tree
Toytime Outreach session with the Herbert Art Gallery
Friday 10th November 2017
We have had a busy week in Year 1 as we have had an assessment week. Miss Doran has been working with small groups of children to assess their learning in maths, reading and writing. Normal lessons have continued for the rest of the class.
In English the children have been looking at firework poetry which lead to them writing a whole class acrostic firework poem and one with a partner. Here the children are performing our whole class poem.

In maths we have been learning about 3D shapes. We even got to make some using cocktail sticks and marshmallows!

Today we were very lucky to be able to visit the Belgrade Theatre and watch a production called 'Lost and Found'. The children really enjoyed it and were an absolute credit to our school.

On Tuesday we had our 'Spooky Stories' day. It was lovely to see so many children dressed in their spooky costumes. We had a fun day beginning with the story of Room on the Broom. The children also enjoyed a lunch time disco and some spooky art in the afternoon.

On Wednesday we began our new Science topic of Light and Dark by reading the story of The Owl Who Was Afraid of The Dark and going on a light and dark hunt.

On Thursday the children started the day with a beautiful assembly sharing all the hard work they've been putting into their lessons with Mrs Clayton, using the story Mabel's Magical Garden. We were so proud of all the children.

We had a special prayer service where we prayed for family, friends and pets who had died. We lit candles as a sign of remembrance.
On Thursday afternoon we concluded our work on Our Local Area by visiting a supermarket. The children explored the store, including the fish and cheese counters and came back with some yummy fruit which we tasted on Friday.

What a fun week we have had in Year 1 this week. The week began with a secret delivery of a farm- there were lots of clues for the children to work out our next story of The Little Red Hen. We began to learn the story with actions, created a story map to help and even got to make some bread!
In maths we looked at subtracting a single digit from a single digit, we had lots of fun playing bingo. We also began to learn our addition facts to 5.
In theme we got to walk into town. We looked at the Tudor buildings on Spon Street, the statue of Lady Godiva and the Old and New Cathedrals. The children were so well behaved, it was a pleasure to take them.
In science the children continued to observe their green beans that they planted.
In music with Mrs Clayton the children carried on learning their songs and some children received narrator parts for our assembly on Thursday 2nd November- a letter will go home regarding this.

This week we began our English block where we are looking at the story of the Magic Porridge Pot. Somebody had been into our class and left a pot of overflowing porridge- just like the book!
In maths we have begun looking at number and place value.
This half term in Science we will be looking at plants and in Theme we will be learning about our local area.
We are very lucky this half term that we will be having a weekly music and drama session with Mrs Clayton. The children have previously worked with Mrs Clayton in nursery and Reception.

The children have had a very busy first week back. It has been lovely getting to know all of the children. This week has been focused on the children becoming familiar with the rules and routines in Year 1, as well as giving Miss Doran and Mrs Blow time to assess your child's reading, writing and maths. This has been done very informally on a one to one basis.
Today we took part in our first whole school mass of the year to celebrate the feast day of St Osburg. As a treat we all had an ice cream!
Could you please send a water bottle into school daily with your child, so that they have regular access to a drink. This should be water only- no juices or fizzy pop.
P.E. will be on a Tuesday and Friday afternoon this term. Please can all children have their kit in school as soon as possible.
